A new challenge for Russia: Germany will transfer Vulcano artillery shells to Ukraine with a range of up to 100 kilometers

The German defense concern Rheinmetall will provide Ukraine with prototypes of artillery shells capable of hitting targets at a distance of up to 100 kilometers, the concern’s CEO Armin Papperger said.

New deliveries

During an event at the Dusseldorf-Bossa Industrial Club, Papperger said that the concern plans to provide Ukraine with hundreds of thousands of ammunition, including long-range prototypes.

"Artillery changes the rules (on the battlefield - editor's note)," - said Papperger.

According to the military portal Defense Express, we are probably talking about a prototype of the long-range 155-mm Vulcano artillery projectile. A year ago, it was reported that Germany was supplying the Ukrainian Armed Forces with laser designators for the Vulcano version, which can fly at a distance of 70 kilometers.

At the beginning of April, the German concern Rheinmetall announced the transfer of 20 additional Marder infantry fighting vehicles to Ukraine. The German government ordered these armored vehicles in March of this year. They are expected to be delivered to Ukraine in 2024.

In addition, at the end of March, the European Union provided Rheinmetall with financial assistance of more than 130 million euros to increase the production of ammunition that Ukraine desperately needs.

New opportunities for the Armed Forces of Ukraine

The 155mm Vulcano artillery shell is a high-precision projectile with a range of up to 100 kilometers. It is equipped with a guidance system that allows you to hit targets with high accuracy. In particular, the projectile can be used to destroy fortified positions, ammunition depots and other important objects. Due to the distance of 100 kilometers and the possibility of use by mobile platforms, counter-battery weapons against this type of weapon are completely useless.

At the same time, it is important to realize that we are actually talking about prototypes of ammunition, as a result of which deliveries are unlikely to exceed several thousand units, but most likely will be limited to hundreds of pieces, which of course will not change the situation on the battlefield.

Experts note that the deliveries themselves are rather important for Germany, since these weapons need testing, and Ukraine has long turned into a testing ground for the latest Western developments.
