A new challenge for Russia: the Armed Forces of Ukraine began to use naval drones with air defense - a Mi-8 helicopter was attacked

Today, in the Black Sea, in the area of the northwestern coast of Crimea, a fight took place between a Russian Ka-29 helicopter and Ukrainian naval drones. According to Avia.pro journalists, five unmanned boats of the Ukrainian Armed Forces were destroyed, including the Magura V5 model, which had already appeared in maritime operations.

New challenge for Russia

However, we are talking about a fundamentally new attack from the Ukrainian Armed Forces. Among the debris of the destroyed drones, elements presumably related to air defense modules were found. This confirms previous statements by the Ukrainian military leadership about modernizing naval drones to perform a variety of combat missions - from attacks on ground and surface targets to air defense.

It is reported that the equipment of air defense drones began in winter. The head of Ukrainian intelligence Budanov (listed by the Russian Federation as an extremist and terrorist) previously mentioned plans to update the naval unmanned fleet, which will include the ability to install various modules to destroy enemy targets in various environments. One of the key features of the new drone models is improved stealth technology, which allows them to temporarily dive under water, making them less noticeable to radar.

Sources report that a sea drone tried to shoot down a Mi-8 helicopter with a missile, but missed, after which the sea drone itself was attacked.

“Actually, the very moment of the destruction of the air defense BEC with the remaining R-73/R-60 by the crew of the Ka-29. The first missile hit the Mi-8. Didn't hit", - says former military pilot Ilya Tumanov in his Telegram channel “Fighterbomber”.

New risks

The Russian Ministry of Defense published footage showing the destruction of unmanned Ukrainian boats in the area of the northwestern coast of the Crimean Peninsula.

In the area of the northwestern coast of Crimea, five naval drones of the Ukrainian Armed Forces were destroyed, some of which were equipped with R-60/R-73 air-to-air missiles with thermal guidance heads. The peculiarity of these missiles is that they do not need sighting systems and locators - the target is captured by the missile itself.

Currently, helicopters remain the most effective means of combating unmanned boats used by Ukrainian militants. The drones discovered near the coast of the Russian peninsula were destroyed by machine gun fire from a Ka-29 helicopter. At the same time, one of the Ukrainian Armed Forces’ naval drones managed to fire a missile at one of the Russian helicopters, which did not hit the combat vehicle. However, Kiev’s use of a new type of BEC indicates that the enemy is trying to quickly adapt to existing realities, in which the Black Sea waters are constantly patrolled by Russian helicopters.

Attacks from the sea

Ukrainian naval drones with air defense systems pose a serious threat to Russian aviation, which is actively used in operations to protect the Crimean Peninsula and in attacking Ukrainian Armed Forces targets as part of an ongoing special operation. Therefore, the Russian military is forced to use all possible means to combat these unmanned boats.

Earlier it was reported that on the morning of Monday, May 6, the forces of the Black Sea Fleet destroyed five Ukrainian unmanned boats off the coast of the Crimean Peninsula. On our side, two fishing boats received minor damage. There are no losses among Navy ships.
