the USSR

A type: a single-engine jet fighter and a two-jet jet-trainer aircraft

Crew: one pilot or two pilots, located one after another

Like its main enemy in the Vietnamese war, the F-4 "Phantom" II, the MiG-21 aircraft today still remains the combat front-line fighter of the Air Force near 50 countries. The aircraft was built in quantities of more than 10 LLC copies in various modifications only in the USSR (not including the modified Chinese version - the F-7 aircraft still in production). The famous design with the delta wing will serve for a long time in the new century.

Designed by the results of the Korean War as a small daily interceptor with high performance characteristics (similar to those of the Lockheed aircraft F-104), MiG-21 was developed by creating a number of prototypes and the order of 40 pre-production aircraft in the middle of the 1950-ies. The end result was an excellent MiG-21F-13, which began to flow into the Soviet frontal aviation at the beginning of 1958. The same modification was built under license in Czechoslovakia and China.

The latest modifications (Western observers identified 14 consecutive modifications) went from the main light fighter-interceptor to the multipurpose combat aircraft, featuring an increased fuel reserve in the inner tanks, more powerful weapons and modern aircraft equipment. To cope with the increase in the total weight associated with these additions, a more powerful engine of the Soyuz MNPK was installed on the MiG-21. The last modification that came into service was the MiG-21bis, which was the third generation of this famous fighter.
