Piaggio P.180 Avanti

More than two decades ago, the aviation construction company Piaggio AeroIndustries (Italy) launched the production of the P.180 Avanti turboprop aircraft, which immediately gained popularity among air operators and the liking of passengers. The demand for "heavenly Ferrari" (this is what Italian turboproppas call among business aviation specialists) remains so high that, if it is possible to manufacture up to 20 ships per year, PiaggioAeroIndustries' order list includes up to 70 units.

With the appearance in 2005 of a newer version of the P180, which was called AvantiII, Italian engineers proved to the aviation world community that in terms of their technical properties turboprop aircraft can still compete with jet models, and turbopropps themselves, like tweed, have for development in the business aviation sector huge potential.

The AvantiII power plant, which consists of two PT6A66B turboprop engines, generates approximately 1700 hp, which gives the aircraft the ability to develop the highest cruising speed up to 740 km / h - an outstanding result for a turboprop. The improved P180 is capable of covering a distance of 2780 km without refueling, and its maximum flight altitude is 12500 m, which is 25 percent higher on average than the same indicators of other turboprop models.

Italian turboprop in terms of on-board electronics is not inferior to anything modern business jets, because it is equipped with the new avionics ProLine21 from the company RockwellCollins.

One of the main features of the aircraft PiaggioAeroIndustries is the original appearance, which stands out clearly against the background of other turboprop classic boats. This primarily applies to engines with an unusual placement of pushing screws that are attached to the motor from behind, and not from the front. Thanks to the additional nose wings in the front of the fuselage (which is very rare for civil aviation ships), the AvantiII model is recognizable unmistakably from afar. "Nose-tail" generates a lift, because of which the horizontal rear stabilizer is transformed into an additional supporting surface.

As a result, the load on the wing decreases at 34 percent, thereby decreasing the size of the wing, and the aerodynamic resistance is decreased and speed of the vessel increases.

This method of increasing lift is considered to be the "Three Bearing Surface Technology", which was developed and patented by Piaggio Aero Industries. Its use caused the narrow shape of the AvantiII's main wing, which has an order of magnitude lower drag than other aircraft with traditional pulling propellers, since the pushing propeller will not create additional vortex flows. In addition, the entire hull structure is designed to contain laminar flow for 30 percent of the total aircraft length and thus increase the lift of the aircraft.

The secret of the great aerodynamic streamlining of the P180 fuselage in its plating. It may seem at first glance that it is made of composite materials, but the AvantiII body actually consists of an aluminum alloy at 90 percent. To achieve the ideal smoothness and shape, PiaggioAeroIndustries has issued a patent for a special method of mounting the shell "inside the outside," during which parts of the fuselage are driven together and fixed with vacuum powered suckers. Then the frame of the frames and stringers is strengthened to the inner part of the skin. All the connecting elements are thus located inside the case, but externally it is absolutely smooth.

Aircraft P180 assembled at the plant in Greenville (United States, South Carolina) and Genoa (Italy), and their trials are also being conducted or Italian, or American territory.
