The multipurpose aircraft began to be designed by the French aircraft engineers in the middle of the 50-ies of the last century, while the designers succeeded in creating an aerodynamically beautiful design of the aircraft, equip it with powerful engines and enable the transport of up to 18 people on board. Nevertheless, in view of the fact that the aircraft was being developed for quite a long time, the aircraft turned out to be very expensive, and in addition to everything it was very costly in terms of its operational properties, and therefore did not get mass distribution - for the entire production period it was built Only 8 aircraft of this model, of which, according to the data for 2015 year, it was known about the existence of only two aircraft.

Thanks to the joint work of French engineers and a group of international designers, it was possible to build an aircraft that is quite modern, even by current time standards, suitable for overcoming long distances of up to 3 thousand kilometers at fairly high speeds, nevertheless, due to the presence of powerful turboprop engines in the Potez 840 aircraft , the aircraft had colossal fuel consumption, which made the operation of these aircraft very costly.

Salon can accommodate aircraft on board to passengers 18, in turn, taking into account the time of the appearance of the aircraft is quite acceptable, however, for a number of very constructive reasons, the aircraft was not suitable for the transportation of goods, and positioned solely as a passenger aircraft.

In addition to civil aviation, the Potez 840 model was supposed to be used in the military sphere, moreover, it was expected that the aircraft would be able to transport both military contingent and be used as an observation aircraft or reconnaissance aircraft, however, for the above reasons, the aircraft in the Air Force and did not enter.

The power plant of the Potez 840 aircraft includes four turboprop aircraft engines Turbomeca Astazou X (depending on the modification), which can develop a thrust of about 640 hp. each. Thanks to the powerful propulsion system, the aircraft could accelerate to a speed of 520 km / h, but the extremely high fuel consumption was a big drawback, which made the project more likely to be considered a failure.

During his rather short period of production of the Potez aircraft models produced in 840 3 basic versions:

  • Potez 840 - Manufacturing base version equipped engines Brand Astazou;
  • Potez 841 - a modified version equipped with Pratt & Whitney Canada PT6A-6 engines (550 hp);
  • Potez 842 - improved version with Turbomeca Astazou X engines.
