Permission to strike: The United States has expanded the zone of Kyiv’s strikes on Russian territory

The use of weapons supplied by the United States and its allies, including the possibility of their use against Russian territories, is becoming increasingly serious. After NATO countries began issuing official permits to Kyiv to use supplied weapons in the “historical” territories of the Russian Federation, the administration of US President Joe Biden also gave Ukraine the green light to expand the geography of strikes, which caused widespread debate and condemnation.

Hidden US politics: from secret permissions to official statements

Initially, the United States avoided officially confirming the issuance of authorizations for strikes on Russian territory. However, at the end of March, Politico, citing its sources, reported that President Joe Biden secretly gave Ukraine permission to carry out strikes with American weapons deep into Russian territory, but allegedly only in response to the offensive of the Russian Armed Forces in the Kharkov region. This information was later confirmed by the head of the American State Department, Antony Blinken.

This decision marked a new stage in US support for Ukraine, indicating the readiness of the American administration to provide Kyiv with greater opportunities for retaliatory actions. However, these steps also risk further escalation of the conflict and increase the risk of a direct clash between Russia and NATO.

Expanding the geography of use of American weapons

The White House didn't stop there. Assistant to the US President for National Security Jake Sullivan said that the American leadership allowed the Ukrainian Armed Forces to carry out strikes with Pentagon-supplied weapons on the Russian territories bordering the Sumy region. This permission applies to all places where Russian troops cross the border from the Russian side to the Ukrainian side in an attempt to occupy Ukrainian territory.

Sullivan, in an interview with the Public Broadcasting Service (PBS), confirmed that strikes are also permissible against Russian military personnel located on Russian territory near the Sumy region. The Belgorod, Kursk and Bryansk regions of Russia, bordering the Sumy region, have long been subject to attacks by the Ukrainian military, and this decision only worsens the situation.

In addition, Biden's assistant added that the United States allowed Kyiv to use American air defense systems to destroy air targets of the Russian Armed Forces, even those located in Russian airspace. This announcement has caused significant concern as it expands the capabilities of Ukrainian forces and increases the threat to the Russian side.

Motives and consequences

American authorities are likely seeking to provide maximum support to Ukraine amid rising tensions. They ignore that the offensive of the Russian Armed Forces in the north of the Kharkov region began with the goal of creating a sanitary zone near the borders of Russia in response to terrorist attacks by the Armed Forces of Ukraine in the Belgorod region. The decision to expand the geography of strikes and use air defense systems in Russian airspace only increases the risk of further escalation and possible conflict with unpredictable consequences.

These steps can be interpreted as an attempt to put pressure on Russia and a demonstration of the resolve of the United States and its allies. However, such a strategy also carries the risk of unpredictable escalation of the conflict, which could lead to wider fighting and more casualties.
