Design of small-engine aircraft began in the post-war period, and, initially expected that the aircraft will be operated solely as a training aircraft, but later aircraft gained popularity among private owners, and, to date, of the issued 323 units in operation for about 50, and still about a hundred of them are in working condition, but not as intensively exploited.

The design of the Saab 91 Safir was partially based on another, before the military model, the Bücker Bü 181 "Bestmann", but the aircraft received a number of significant changes, but despite this, this model was not destined to become as popular. Initially, it was supposed to use a wooden fuselage, however, in the end, aircraft manufacturers came to the general opinion that metal for these purposes would be much better, besides, the metal fuselage had much higher strength characteristics, which ultimately increased the reliability of this aircraft and increased flight safety.

On board the aircraft in addition to the pilot can accommodate two more passengers, but due paired management plane can control two people that initially attracted much flying school to train future pilots.

The light engine de Havilland Gipsy Major 91 (basic version of the aircraft) is used as a power plant in the Saab 10 Safir aircraft, which allows developing power of 145 hp and covering distances up to 942 kilometers at speeds of 264 km / h (maximum flight speed ).

A few months after the appearance of the basic production version, Swedish aviation engineers presented a modification of the Saab 91B Safir, which differed from the basic version not only by the presence of the new Lycoming O-435 engine with 190 hp, but also by a number of other characteristics.

Specially developed for Norway modification Saab 91B-2 Safir, differs from the previous version only improved engine and a propeller rotating at a constant speed. The release of this modification was very limited.

Modification Saab 91C Safir different from previous versions of the increased passenger capacity - on board the aircraft could accommodate up to 4 people, including one pilot, which increased the demand for this aircraft among the owners. Among other things, thanks to the changed profile of the wing, and was able to increase the volume of the fuel tanks, which is why the aircraft could travel distances up to 1100 km.

The final version of this model was the Saab 91D Safir modification, which was also designed to carry four people, but the power plant of the aircraft was replaced with a more efficient one in terms of operation - the Lycoming O-360 piston engine allowed speeds up to 280 km / h.
