BAC 1-11 (LHC 1-11)

BAC 1-11 123Short-haul jet airliner BAC 1-11, having the name «One-Eleven», was created as a replacement passenger turboprop Vickers Viscount, British aircraft manufacturing company «British Aircraft Corporation». After the French aircraft Sud Aviation Caravelle, BAC One-Eleven was the second short-haul jet airliner, was put into operation. BAC 1-11 was one of the most successful British models of passenger aircraft and was widely used before the 90-ies.

Work on the One-Eleven aircraft design began in 1956. It was based on the initial project for the creation of the 32 local passenger jet Hunting H107, which was developed by the British aviation engineering company Hunting Aircraft. Four years later, in 1960, Hunting Aircraft became part of the British Aircraft Corporation.

In 1961, the aircraft project received the designation BAC 111, and then BAC 1-11 or One-Eleven. The basic model of the aircraft was designated as BAC 1-11 series 200 (BAC 1-11 200s). This version had a length of 28,50 meters with a wingspan of 26,97 meters and accommodated 79 passenger seats in its fuselage, and at maximum load was capable of flying up to 1140 kilometers at an average speed of 740 kilometers per hour.

The aircraft received a circular fuselage with a low swept wing, which is equipped with flaps and aerodynamic brakes. The tail unit has a "T" -shaped shape. The landing gear of the aircraft consists of three struts, which are equipped with twin wheels and hydraulic stabilizers. In the tail section of the first basic model of the aircraft, the Spey Mk. 506 with a thrust of 47,22 kN, manufactured by Rolls-Royce. The first flight with these engines, the aircraft made on August 20, 1963. During a re-test flight on October 22, 1963, the BAC 1-11 series 200 crashed due to a deep stall from the bearing surfaces. The plane's crew of seven was killed.

The cause of the tragedy was, the aircraft's exit to the supercritical angle of attack when climbing. In this case, the "T" -shaped tail unit was obscured by the bearing wing of the aircraft, and the horizontal rudders were not steerable, while the very wing of the aircraft quickly lost its lift and the aircraft went into stall. This incident, although it did not affect the number of orders, but pushed back the timing of commissioning the aircraft. In the control system of the airliner, a number of design changes were made, which did not allow the aircraft to enter the overcritical angles of attack, and the area of the horizontal rudders was also increased.

In 1963, the company decided to expand the model range, in addition to the base model, with two more aircraft. They are the BAC 1-11 series 300 (BAC 1-11 300s) airliners powered by Spey Mk. 511 with 51,71 kN thrust and BAC 1-11 series 400 (BAC 1-11 400s), with the same motors, but intended for export to the USA. These modifications had better carrying capacity and increased range compared to the base model. These versions are capable of carrying 79 passengers over a distance of, on average, 2250 kilometers.

April 9 1965, the aircraft company BAC 1-11 200s belonging to «British United Airways» made its first commercial flight on the route "Gatwick - Genoa".

A 16 April this year, the aircraft was given the American certificate of airworthiness.

In 1967, a 119 seater version of the aircraft was introduced, designated the BAC 1-11 series 500 (BAC 1-11 500s). This version has a larger wing span of 28,50 meters, an elongated fuselage, reinforced landing gear and more powerful Rolls-Royce RB.163 Spey Mk 512-14DW engines with 55,8 kN thrust. The flight range of this version is about 2740 kilometers. On June 30, 1967, BAC 1-11 500s made its maiden flight.

In 1970, a version of the BAC 1-11 series 475 (BAC 1-11 475s) was launched, designed for operation in high altitude conditions. This aircraft has a fuselage from a BAC 1-11 400s aircraft, and wings and engines from a BAC 1-11 500s model. The One-Eleven 475s version is equipped with an improved chassis, which allows it to take off from unprepared airfields.

Versions of BAC 1-11 aircraft were assembled not only in Britain, but also from 1982 to 1989 and Romania. In total, about 244 BAC 1-11 aircraft were built.

To date, the aircraft is not made, but is used by some air carriers of the Asian and African camp short in routing. In Europe, aircraft decommissioning 1998 year due to tighter regulations on noise levels.
