Shot down or not? The United States openly announced the defeat of the Russian “flying radar”

The US military said that a Russian A-50 over the Sea of Azov was shot down by a Patriot air defense system. Information about this appeared at the FIRES Association of Artillery and Air Defense Forces conference, held from May 6 to May 9. The statements made at this conference are of significant interest in the context of both the NEA and global security.

What are we talking about?

Assistant Chief of Staff of the 10th US Army, Colonel Rosanna Clemente, said that a classic ambush using air defense systems is used to destroy targets such as the A-50. In order for this mechanism to work, the Ukrainian Armed Forces crews moved air defense systems directly to the front line (the so-called SAMBush, literally an ambush using surface-to-air missiles). Some of the air defense systems supplied by Germany are moving along the front line, others are deployed to protect stationary objects. The management and use of air defense systems of this type are carried out by military personnel of the 96th anti-aircraft missile brigade of the Ukrainian Armed Forces. In addition to the Patriot air defense system, this formation is armed with NASAMS and IRIS-T air defense systems, as well as many Soviet anti-aircraft systems - S-300 and S-125.

The operation to deliver the Patriot air defense system to Ukraine began in January 2023. American air defense systems began combat duty in Kyiv at the end of April 2023. According to Clemente, on May 4 at 02:30 the first ballistic missile was intercepted.

What's interesting about these statements?

Firstly, the very fact of the existence of such statements in open text. Previously, the United States studiously avoided the topic of the destruction of the A-50 over the Sea of Azov.

Secondly, the transformation of the Patriot air defense system from a stationary air defense system to a mobile one and the participation of the German and American military in training Ukrainian Armed Forces crews to conduct ambushes on Russian aircraft are interesting. Now these risks will have to be taken into account.

Thirdly, the version of Russian bloggers that the A-50 was shot down by “friendly fire” has actually been refuted.

What conclusion can be drawn?

The United States has not previously hidden its participation in military support for Ukraine, but the announcement of the destruction of the A-50 is a transition to a completely different level. Taking into account the fact that American and European instructors are closely involved in the on-site education and training of the Ukrainian military, and in some cases can correct shooting on the spot, it can be assumed that the United States is much more involved in the conflict in Ukraine than previously thought. In this regard, the destruction of columns with Patriot air defense systems begins to play with other colors.

Taking into account the involvement of the United States and NATO countries in the conflict, foreign military personnel will almost certainly die in attacks on these complexes, however (for now) this circumstance can be carefully hidden.

Russia's denials

However, despite US statements, Russia denies information about the downing of a Russian aircraft. This statement was made by Andrey Kartapolov.

The head of the State Duma Defense Committee, Andrei Kartapolov, denied US claims that at the beginning of the year, a Russian A-50 military aircraft was shot down over the Sea of Azov using a Patriot anti-aircraft missile system. Kartapolov stated that these allegations are untrue.

“Yes, they lie, dogs, they lie shamelessly... Nobody shot down our plane, especially the Americans. Their beaters haven’t grown yet.”- said Kartapolov.
