High-speed bomber

High-speed bomber (later - Medium bomber) - aircraft, the concept of which was developed in the 1930s, according to which a bomber with sufficient speed had a significant advantage over the enemy.

The first plane, which was built on this concept was "Henschel Hye-70». Later, for its change of aircraft constructed "Dornier Up-17».

Before 1937 of flights, during which set several records speed, we confirmed the importance of this concept. However, during the Spanish Civil War-laden bombs before-17 can not develop enough speed to evade interception.

The pace of development of bombers in 1930-ies even temporarily bypassed rates fighter design, but with the emergence at the end of "Spitfires" decade and "Hurricanes" their qualities were enough to not only catch up with the Up-17, but also have the advantage of cannon armament. Therefore, the 1940 17-plane to be removed from production.

In Germany, attempts to create new high-speed bombers continued, which were opposed to the large-sized bombers of the United States Air Force and the Royal Air Force with powerful defensive weapons. Thus, the Junkers U-88, Messerschmitt Me-410 Shershen and the jet Arado Ar-234 Molniya, which was called the "fastest bomber", were created. The Dornier Do-335 and Henschel He-219 aircraft were developed for the Luftwaffe according to the same concept, but they changed their combat mission.

In 1939, at the request of the Luftwaffe began to develop high-speed medium bomber, carrying a larger bomb load ("Bomber B"). He was offered as a substitute for the first high-speed bomber.

The project was shelved due to lack of engine power greater than the multi-block 24-cylinder Jumo-222.

The most effective high-speed bomber of World War II - is the British "Mosquito." He managed to maintain its speed advantage at this time, so the loss of "Mosquito" the smallest among all models of the Royal Air Force bombers.

According to this concept in the Soviet Union produced ANT-40 1941 to year.

Later they began to produce planes for medium bomber concept. In particular, these aircraft are:

  • Martin B-26 Marauder.

  • North American B-25 Mitchell.

  • Martin Baltimore.

  • Handley Page Hampden.
