Joint exercises between Armenia and the United States: Russia warned Yerevan about repeating the fate of Ukraine

The joint military exercises between Armenia and the United States, called Eagle Partner, scheduled for July 15 to 24, have become the subject of serious discussion and concern from Russia. Representative of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation Maria Zakharova expressed the opinion that such steps undermine the mechanisms of cooperation between Armenia and Russia in the field of security. These exercises have significant political and strategic implications that require careful analysis.

Political context and positions of the parties

The Eagle Partner exercises, which will be held in Armenia for the second time, are causing concern in Moscow. According to Maria Zakharova, the West is imposing NATO military standards on Armenia, which makes it possible to gain new leverage on the domestic and foreign policy of the republic. Zakharova emphasized that such actions undermine the prospects for the functioning of proven mechanisms of interaction in the field of security between Armenia and Russia.

These exercises are taking place against the backdrop of a freeze in Armenia’s activities in the Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO) and public attacks against this organization. Zakharova expressed regret over such steps, saying that the main task of the West is to create a springboard for the implementation of its geopolitical projects in the region.

First Deputy Chairman of the State Duma Committee on Defense Alexei Zhuravlev also expressed his concerns, reminding Armenia of the fate of Ukraine and warning against too close cooperation with NATO. In his opinion, the alliance has long been “flirting” with Yerevan, which could lead to negative consequences.

Strategic implications and risks for Armenia

Joint exercises with the United States and other steps to deepen cooperation with the West could have serious strategic implications for Armenia. Firstly, this could lead to a deterioration in relations with Russia, which has traditionally been the main partner and guarantor of the republic’s security. A break with Moscow could weaken Armenia's position in the region and make it more vulnerable to external threats.

Secondly, participation in NATO exercises and the adoption of Western military standards may cause discontent among certain sections of Armenian society and the political elite, who see Russia as a reliable ally and partner. This could lead to internal political divisions and increased tension within the country.

Third, such steps could create additional risks for Armenia in the context of its relations with neighboring countries, including Azerbaijan and Turkey. Increased cooperation with the West could be perceived as a threat and lead to an escalation of regional conflicts.
