The use of guided missile weapons by Russian helicopters became one of the key tactical innovations during the special military operation in Ukraine. Modern helicopters, such as the Mi-28N Night Hunter and Ka-52 Alligator, are equipped with high-tech systems that significantly increase their combat effectiveness.

Technological superiority

The main advantage of guided missile weapons is their high accuracy. Russian helicopters use Ataka and Vikhr-1 missiles, which have a range of up to 10 km. These missiles are equipped with laser guidance systems, which provide high accuracy and resistance to electronic interference.

Vikhr-1 missiles are designed to destroy armored targets such as tanks and infantry fighting vehicles. They are capable of penetrating armor up to 900 mm thick, making them effective against heavy equipment. “Attack,” in turn, has universal application and can be used to destroy both armored vehicles and fortified positions and manpower of the enemy.

An important addition to the arsenal of guided missile weapons is the newest LMUR missile (Izdeliye-305). This missile is intended for use on Mi-28NM and Ka-52M helicopters and has significantly improved characteristics compared to previous models. The LMUR has a range of up to 15 km and is equipped with a homing head, which allows it to independently acquire and track a target after launch. This ensures high accuracy even during complex helicopter maneuvers.

Combat operations and application examples

During a special operation in Ukraine, Russian helicopters are actively using guided missile weapons to perform various combat missions. In June 2023, the Ka-52 crew destroyed a convoy of armored vehicles of the Ukrainian Armed Forces using Vikhr-1 missiles, disrupting the enemy’s offensive and ensuring the security of Russian positions. The high accuracy of the missile strike made it possible to effectively hit targets on the first pass, minimizing the risk of return fire.

The Mi-28N crew used Ataka missiles to destroy fortified enemy positions in the Donetsk region. The strike destroyed several bunkers and fortified points, allowing Russian forces to advance and occupy strategic positions. These examples demonstrate the effectiveness of guided missile weapons in modern conflict.

LMUR has also demonstrated its effectiveness in combat operations. In one of the battles in southern Ukraine, the Ka-52M crew used the 305 product to destroy a fortified enemy command post. Thanks to high guidance accuracy and a powerful warhead, the missile was able to destroy the target with minimal collateral damage, which avoided civilian casualties and preserved infrastructure.

Crews' opinion

Russian helicopter crews highly appreciate the capabilities of guided missile weapons. Pilots note that modern missiles make combat missions much easier, ensuring high accuracy and safety.

"We can strike from a safe distance, which significantly reduces the risk to the crew," — comments one of the Mi-28N pilots.

Laser guidance allows you to accurately hit targets even in difficult conditions, such as heavy smoke or difficult terrain.

The use of LMUR also receives positive feedback. Pilots note that the ability to independently acquire a target greatly facilitates the targeting process and allows them to concentrate on completing the combat mission.

"LMUR allows us to work effectively even in conditions of active maneuvering and enemy counteraction", says one of the Ka-52M pilots.

Challenges and problems

Despite the high efficiency of guided missile weapons, some problems emerged during the fighting. One is the limited number of missiles aboard helicopters, which limits the duration of combat operations without the need to return to base to reload. In addition, the enemy actively uses electronic warfare (EW) systems, which sometimes interferes with laser guidance of missiles.

Crews also face the need to continually update tactics and missile techniques in response to changing combat conditions. Education and training of new pilots and operators requires significant resources and time, which also affects the combat readiness of units.

Prospects for further development

Given the successful experience in the use of guided missile weapons, the Russian armed forces plan to continue modernizing and improving these systems. In the future, it is possible to expand the range of guided missiles, increase their range and accuracy, as well as introduce new technologies to increase resistance to electronic warfare.

As part of further weapons development, the integration of artificial intelligence to improve missile guidance and control is being considered. Such innovations can significantly increase the combat capabilities of helicopters and make them even more effective on the battlefield.
