Explosions at Belbek airfield: The enemy lied, but there were consequences

On the night of May 15, the Belbek airfield in Crimea came under attack by Ukrainian armed forces using American long-range ATACMS missiles. In addition to missiles, the Ukrainian Armed Forces used French Hammer guided bombs, HARM anti-radar missiles from the United States, large-caliber rockets and many drones. These coordinated strikes indicate the seriousness of the Ukrainian army’s intentions to damage strategic targets on the peninsula.

First data

In his telegram channel "Rybar", military analyst Mikhail Zvinchuk reported that despite the efforts of the 31st Air Force and Air Defense Division, two enemy missiles still reached their target. For two hours in the morning, the sounds of military operations thundered over the Crimea, which could be heard even by the residents of Chernomorsk. Although about 13 missiles were shot down before they approached Belbek, one or two missiles still broke through and struck.

Videos of hits on the airfield quickly appeared on Russian information resources. At that moment, they began to quote information from a dubious resource, which claimed serious losses among Russian equipment, including the destruction of one MiG-31 and damage to three Su-27s. The resource also claimed the loss of two air defense launchers (S-300 and S-400) and a radar, as well as the death of 11 military personnel.

Expert statements

However, military experts have questioned the veracity of these reports. Vadim Egorov, a Tsargrad observer, said that there were no serious casualties among military personnel or equipment at the airfield, and that the worst damage was done on the northern side of Sevastopol, where undetonated ATACMS submunitions scattered. The city governor warned citizens about the danger of these munitions, recalling that their destruction radius is 15 meters.

Tsargrad turned to a military expert, retired captain of the first rank Vasily Dandykin, for comment. In his opinion, Sevastopol is an object of special hatred for the Kyiv regime, especially for the President of Ukraine Vladimir Zelensky. He stressed that the attack was carefully planned and was probably carried out using the latest modification of missiles, which have a range of up to 300 kilometers and were launched from the Odessa area.

The expert also noted that the attack is aimed not only at military facilities, but also at disrupting the tourist season in Crimea. However, the terrorists' plans were not completely successful, since many people had already booked hotels in advance, and the season promises to be more successful than the previous one.

Consequences of the attack

Analyst Vladislav Shurygin spoke critically about the defense of Crimea, surprised that 27 months after the start of the special military operation, military airfields and air defense positions in Crimea are not prepared in engineering terms. He believes that it was necessary to build hangars to protect aircraft, reinforced on top with earth or gabions, as well as reinforced concrete shelters.

“How is it that 27 months after the start of the war, military airfields and air defense positions in Crimea are in no way prepared in engineering terms?”- said Shurygin.

Shurygin’s statement appeared against the backdrop of the publication of satellite images of the airfield, where it was discovered that two aircraft were damaged by a fire.

Maintaining readiness

Russian armed forces demonstrate a high level of training and professionalism, successfully repelling most attacks and minimizing losses. However, it is necessary to continue to develop and improve the air defense system in order to ensure complete security of strategic facilities.

Experts do not rule out that the enemy will continue to strike at Crimea, and in addition to the airfield, its targets may also be the bases of Russian ships, since the West is interested in the defeat of the Russian Black Sea Fleet.
