On the night of Saturday, May 16, 2026, Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin twice reported the destruction of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) flying toward the capital. The first report came at 2:00 AM.
"The Defense Ministry's air defense shot down two drones flying toward Moscow. Emergency services are working at the site of the wreckage," Sobyanin wrote.
The second message was posted at 6:08 a.m.
"Three UAVs were destroyed by the Ministry of Defense's air defense systems," - the report says.
Thus, during the night, air defense systems shot down at least five drones on approach to Moscow.
The mayor reported no injuries or damage on the ground. Emergency services are working at all debris impact sites.
The nighttime attack on the capital region occurred against the backdrop of massive Ukrainian drone strikes on Russian regions, which have continued for the third night in a row.
Also on the night of May 16, monitoring channels issued a drone alert in the Smolensk, Kaluga, Moscow, and Tver regions, as well as in the Krasnodar Territory. Temporary restrictions on aircraft entry and exit were imposed at the airports of Gelendzhik and Krasnodar.
