African countries have expressed criticism and concern about the actions of the Private Military Company (PMC) Wagner on the continent. Foreign Policy reports this, citing an anonymous statement from a representative of the US Department of Defense.
According to this source, a number of African states expressed dissatisfaction with the activities of the Wagner PMC and declared their reluctance to depend on this company:
“Representatives of African countries came to us and said: “We don’t want to depend on the Wagner PMC.” We see problems in their presence.”
The actions of the Wagnerites in Africa are of concern to many countries, despite the fact that the PMC is officially engaged in the fight against terrorism in the region. For example, in the Central African Republic, the Wagner PMC is involved in security. However, information has emerged that if its fighters do not sign a contract with the Russian Ministry of Defense, they will have to leave the country.
What was happening caused reactions in other African countries. Thus, the Prime Minister of Niger, Uhumudu Mahamadou, denied information about the presence of “Wagnerites” in Niger. He emphasized that Islamist groups, not PMCs, are located on the border between Mali and Niger.
