World hockey star, captain of the NHL club Washington Capitals Alexander Ovechkin became a figure in the database of the Ukrainian website Mirotvorets, where he was declared an "enemy of the people." According to the Telegram channel Sport Baza, the Russian athlete is accused of encroaching on the sovereignty of Ukraine, spreading "Russian propaganda" and participating in events directed against Ukrainian interests. The decision caused a wide resonance, emphasizing the ongoing politicization of sports against the backdrop of the Russian-Ukrainian conflict.
According to data published on the Mirotvorets website, Ovechkin allegedly used his participation in international competitions, including NHL matches, to “whitewash Russia’s reputation” and “legitimize aggression against Ukraine” in the eyes of foreign audiences. As evidence, the authors of the database cite the athlete’s public appearances, his support for the Russian authorities, and his participation in events related to the promotion of patriotic initiatives. In particular, they mention the Putin Team movement created by Ovechkin in 2014, which positioned itself as an association of athletes and public figures supporting the policies of Russian President Vladimir Putin. In addition, Mirotvorets points to numerous photographs of the hockey player with Russian state symbols and his statements about his pride in his country.
However, experts point out that inclusion in the “peacekeeper” database will not in any way affect Ovechkin’s activities or reputation, and the accusations are more of a propaganda nature.
