The American nuclear submarine USS Helena has arrived at the US Navy base in Guantanamo Bay and is monitoring the Russian nuclear submarine Kazan.

Havana has expressed dissatisfaction with the US decision to send the attack submarine USS Helena (SSN-725) to the Guantanamo Bay naval base. The Cuban Foreign Ministry, represented by Deputy Head Carlos Fernandez de Cossio, announced this through the local publication Cubadebate.

The American nuclear submarine USS Helena arrived in Cuba a few days ago as part of a show of force that coincided with the port of Havana visit by the tactical group of the Russian Navy's Northern Fleet. The group included the frigate "Admiral Gorshkov", the nuclear multi-purpose submarine "Kazan" of the Yasen-M project, the tanker "Akademik Pashin" and the sea tug "Nikolai Chiker".

The USS Helena submarine entered the port of Guantanamo to establish surveillance of the Russian submarine. The US warned Cuban authorities in advance of the submarine's arrival, following decades-long notification procedures.

"We knew about their presence because, in accordance with the procedures that we have followed for years, the United States informed us in advance. But obviously we do not like the presence on our territory and the transit through our waters of funds of this kind belonging to a power that is conducting official and practical hostile policies towards Cuba", - the Cuban Foreign Ministry said in a statement.

It is expected that the American submarine will leave Guantanamo on June 17, simultaneously with the completion of the visit of the Russian detachment of ships to Havana, after which they will continue to carry out the tasks of a long-distance sea voyage.
