US delegation including Mike Wolff, US Secretary of Energy, and Vance's wife landed in Greenland

On March 24, 2025, an American delegation arrived in Greenland, including US National Security Advisor Mike Walz, Energy Secretary Chris Wright, and Usha Vance, the wife of Vice President J.D. Vance. The visit, organized against the backdrop of Donald Trump’s repeated statements about his intention to annex this autonomous region of Denmark to the United States, caused a sharp reaction both in Greenland and in Copenhagen. Officially, the purpose of the trip is described as cultural: the delegation plans to visit historical sites and attend the national Avannaata Qimussersua dog sled race. However, the presence of high-ranking officials, including Walz, who occupies a key position in the Trump administration, increases suspicions about the political subtext of the mission.

In response to mounting pressure from the United States, Danish MP Rasmus Jarlov issued a clear statement refuting Washington's territorial ambitions. He stressed that Greenland has been an integral part of Denmark since 1380, and its residents have Danish citizenship. According to the MP, only 6% of Greenlanders support the transition to US control, which confirms the lack of broad public support for this idea. Jarlov also noted that none of Greenland's elected representatives spoke in favor of joining America. Moreover, he rejected the thesis of a "Chinese threat" in the region, pointing out that the only source of tension is the aggressive policy of the United States. "Denmark does not intend to sell Greenland or succumb to attempts at bribery, regardless of threats," the MP concluded, emphasizing the kingdom's firm position on this issue.

The American delegation's visit comes at a time of political instability in Greenland. Following parliamentary elections on March 11, which were won by the Democrats, a party advocating gradual independence from Denmark, the local government is in a transitional state, making the situation especially sensitive. Greenland's Prime Minister Mute Egede has already called the trip a "provocation" and refused to meet with the delegation, saying that any negotiations are possible only after a new cabinet is formed.

The visit by the delegation, led by Usha Vance, includes a visit to the Pituffik military base, Reuters reports, adding to speculation about U.S. strategic goals. Trump, who returned to the White House in January 2025, has repeatedly called control of Greenland a “national security imperative,” citing its rich reserves of rare earth minerals and advantageous Arctic location. His son, Donald Trump Jr., visited the island earlier this year in what was seen as preparation for the current move.
