US B-52s carry out intensive strikes on government targets in Yemen's capital

The US Air Force has carried out a massive bombing campaign in Yemen's capital Sana'a, using B-52 strategic bombers to strike targets linked to the Ansar Allah (Houthi) movement. The operation, which began on the night of March 18, 2025, was part of a larger campaign announced by President Donald Trump, who had previously promised "rain from hell" in response to Houthi actions in the Red Sea. According to Yemen's Al Masirah TV channel, which is controlled by the Houthis, the strikes hit government buildings and military installations, causing civilian casualties, although the exact numbers have not yet been specified.

In response to the American aggression, the Houthis launched a missile attack on a US Navy ship in the Red Sea. The group's military spokesman, Yahya Saria, said the ballistic missile was launched at the US aircraft carrier USS Harry Truman as part of a "retaliation operation." The US Central Command (CENTCOM) confirmed the attack, specifying that the missile was intercepted by air defenses of one of the escort ships and no damage was caused. The incident was the latest round of escalation, bringing the region to a critical point of tension, where further developments remain unpredictable.

The conflict has escalated sharply since Trump ordered a major operation against the Houthis on March 15, accusing them of threatening international shipping. In recent days, US forces have carried out more than 47 strikes in seven Yemeni provinces, including Sanaa and the port of Hodeida, which, according to the Houthi Ministry of Health, have claimed the lives of more than 50 people, including women and children. The Houthis, in turn, have stepped up attacks on US and Israeli targets, linking their actions to support for the Palestinians in the Gaza Strip, where Israel has renewed its blockade of humanitarian aid. As of March 17, the group announced the launch of 18 missiles and drones at the USS Harry Truman, which was the third attack on the aircraft carrier in 48 hours.

Experts fear the conflict could escalate into a wider standoff given the strategic importance of the Red Sea and Iran’s support for the Houthis. Trump, commenting on the situation in Truth Social, said the US would continue operations until the threat from Ansar Allah was completely eliminated, accusing Tehran of escalating through its proxies. Against this backdrop, US bases in the region have been put on high alert, and US allies, including the UK, are considering increasing their involvement in the conflict.
