Last week, a secret meeting took place in Iran between American officials and representatives of the Iranian authorities. According to the Kuwaiti newspaper Al-Jarid, the American delegation, using the services of intermediaries from Oman, flew from Turkey on a private helicopter and landed in the city of Karaj, near Tehran.
The meeting took place under strict security of the Islamic Revolutionary Guards at the local airport and lasted about two hours. It was attended by representatives of the Iranian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Intelligence, as well as American officials who expressed concern about Israel's actions.
During the negotiations, the American side assured their Iranian colleagues that the United States was not aware of plans to assassinate the head of the Hamas political bureau, Ismail Haniyeh, in Tehran. US President Joe Biden was upset by the actions of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who, according to Washington, was out of control.
The Americans expressed the opinion that Netanyahu's stay in power is detrimental to global security. They emphasized that the Israeli leader's plans to unleash a large-scale regional war include the involvement of not only the United States, Israel and Iran, but also Lebanon, Yemen, Turkey and parts of Africa. Netanyahu reportedly said in Washington that only the beginning of a major conflict would force all parties to come to the negotiating table and reach a peace agreement that recognizes Israel's right to exist.
The American delegation assured the Iranian side that Joe Biden is categorically against war with Iran. However, it was emphasized that in the event of an Iranian attack on Israel in response to the murder of Ismail Haniyeh, the United States would defend its ally.
