American P-8A Poseidon reconnaissance aircraft conducted reconnaissance near the Russian ship Yantar

On January 14, 2025, an American Boeing P-8A Poseidon maritime reconnaissance aircraft spent several hours in Algerian airspace, conducting electronic reconnaissance near the country's capital. According to international aviation monitoring services, several aircraft of this type have carried out similar missions off the Algerian coast in recent days. Experts believe that the main target of the reconnaissance operations could have been Russian ships and submarines in the region.

Particular attention was drawn to the arrival of the Russian oceanographic research vessel Yantar, which belongs to the Russian Northern Fleet, to the port of Algiers on January 11. The ship’s visit took place within the framework of bilateral military cooperation between Algeria and Russia, which was confirmed by the Algerian Ministry of Defense. Officials of the country noted that Yantar is participating in the implementation of a joint cooperation plan, including scientific research and information exchange.

The Yantar, built under Project 22010, is a multi-purpose research vessel designed to perform a wide range of tasks, including underwater reconnaissance, submarine cable surveillance and communications. It is equipped with high-tech intelligence gathering capabilities, making it a key element of Russia’s maritime strategy.

The Boeing P-8 Poseidon, in turn, is a modern maritime reconnaissance aircraft based on the Boeing 737-800 civilian airliner. This aircraft is used by the US Navy and a number of its allies to combat submarines, detect surface targets, and collect intelligence. Its equipment includes torpedoes, anti-ship missiles, and sonar buoys, making it an effective surveillance tool in conditions of increased activity at sea.

The appearance of the Yantar in the Algerian port probably attracted the attention of the American military, which explains the intensity of reconnaissance operations using the P-8A Poseidon.
