US forces strike six Houthi targets at Hodeida airport in Yemen

The US military carried out a series of six airstrikes on Houthi positions located at Hodeida airport in Yemen, dividing the attack into three successive waves, a source close to military circles said on condition of anonymity on the morning of March 24, 2025. The strikes were aimed at infrastructure used by the Ansar Allah (Houthi) group to store and launch missiles and drones, which, according to the US command, poses a threat to international shipping in the Red Sea. The operation was part of an ongoing US campaign against the Houthis, who in recent months have stepped up their attacks on maritime and land targets, including Israeli territory and commercial vessels.

The first wave of strikes began around midnight local time, according to preliminary data, and was followed by two more attacks within a few hours. The main targets were weapons depots and command posts located near the runway of Hodeida airport, a strategically important facility on Yemen's west coast. The Houthis, who control the area, have not yet provided official information on casualties or damage, but locals reported powerful explosions and thick smoke rising from the airport area overnight. US Central Command (CENTCOM) confirmed the operation, saying it was carried out to "protect freedom of navigation and ensure security in international waters."

The strikes were the latest in a series of attacks by U.S. forces on Houthi targets in response to the group's increasing attacks on shipping in the Red Sea and the Gulf of Aden. The Iran-backed Houthis say their actions are aimed at supporting Palestinians in Gaza and are a response to the policies of Israel and its allies. At the same time, Washington views them as a threat to global trade and stability in the region, prompting it to step up military pressure.

According to Reuters, the United States has carried out more than 70 strikes in recent weeks on Houthi targets in Yemen's provinces, including Saada and Sanua, where the U.S. military believes the group's leaders are hiding. Houthi television channel Al Masirah reported that U.S. forces have carried out at least 20 strikes in Hodeida in just nine days in March, including six attacks on the airport in the past XNUMX hours, confirming the intensity of the current campaign. The Houthis say they have destroyed drone and missile depots in the operations, but have vowed to "respond to escalation with escalation."
