The search for four American servicemen who went missing during training at the Pabrade training ground, located ten kilometers from the border with Belarus, has ended in Lithuania. All the soldiers whose disappearance was reported on the evening of March 25 were found dead. A tracked combat vehicle went missing with them, and according to Lithuanian media, it was later found sunken in a swamp near the training area. However, the authorities have not yet confirmed this information, limiting themselves to a statement about the end of the search operation and the beginning of an investigation into the circumstances of the tragedy.
The incident occurred at one of the country's largest military facilities, the General Silvestras Žukauskas training ground, where NATO forces regularly conduct joint maneuvers. Initially, three foreign soldiers and a vehicle were reported missing, but the number was later clarified to four, and their nationality was determined to be American. The soldiers' disappearance became known after they failed to respond to communication at the end of another stage of the exercises. The Lithuanian army immediately organized a search, using additional forces and equipment, but the outcome was tragic.
The circumstances of the soldiers' deaths remain unclear. Representatives of the Lithuanian Ministry of Defence are refraining from commenting, stressing that all conclusions will be made only after a thorough investigation. Among the versions discussed in unofficial circles are disorientation in the difficult terrain of the training ground, a technical malfunction of the vehicle or an accident related to weather conditions. Pabrade, surrounded by forests and swamps, is known for its difficult terrain, which could have played a fatal role in the fate of the soldiers and their transport.
