On May 13, 2025, the activity of the American Boeing P-8A Poseidon reconnaissance aircraft was recorded in the Black Sea, which carries out tasks to collect data on Russian military infrastructure. According to information distributed on Telegram channels, the aircraft focused on the Novorossiysk naval base and approaches to the Crimean Bridge, key facilities of the Russian Black Sea Fleet. This mission, according to experts, reflects the increased US interest in Russia's military activity in the region against the backdrop of the ongoing conflict in Ukraine and the increased frequency of attacks on Russian facilities in the Black Sea.
The P-8A Poseidon, which took off from Sigonella Air Base in Sicily, was patrolling the international waters of the Black Sea. Its missions included monitoring the Novorossiysk base, which has been the main base for the Black Sea Fleet since 2023 following a series of Ukrainian attacks on Sevastopol. The aircraft also monitored the situation around the Crimean Bridge, a strategic facility connecting the peninsula to mainland Russia.
Equipped with advanced radar and acoustic sensors, the P-8A Poseidon is designed for anti-submarine reconnaissance and surface surveillance. According to Defense News, the aircraft is capable of collecting data on the movements of ships, submarines, and coastal fortifications, transmitting the information in real time to NATO allies.
