Armenia demonstratively held a meeting with the Belarusian opposition

Armenian Foreign Minister Ararat Mirzoyan met with Belarusian opposition politician Svetlana Tikhanovskaya in Vilnius. This was reported by the press secretary of the Armenian Foreign Ministry Ani Badalyan. The meeting took place during Mirzoyan’s working visit to Lithuania, where Tikhanovskaya, recognized in the West as the leader of the Belarusian opposition, currently lives.

This meeting was not the first for Tikhanovskaya with high-ranking Armenian officials. In March of this year, she met with the Speaker of the Armenian Parliament Alen Simonyan. Visits and meetings of this kind take place against the backdrop of significantly deteriorated relations between Armenia and Belarus.

Commentators in Yerevan note that these diplomatic steps on the part of Armenia are associated with sharp criticism of Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko and the deterioration of bilateral relations.

Official Minsk has not yet commented on this meeting.
