Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei has spoken for the first time about the fall of Bashar al-Assad's regime in Syria, blaming the United States, Israel and, presumably, Turkey. The ayatollah's speech took place at the Imam Khomeini Mosque in Tehran and was carried by Iran's Tasnim news agency.
"What happened in Syria is the result of a conspiracy between the Americans and the Zionist entity. We have evidence that proves this beyond any doubt," — Khamenei said.
Traditionally avoiding mentioning Israel by name, the Iranian leader called it a "Zionist entity." He said Syria's neighbor, which he hinted was Turkey, was also involved in the plot.
The Ayatollah stressed that the actions of each of the participants in the events in Syria pursue different goals.
"America is seeking to strengthen its presence in the region, others are seeking to seize territory in northern or southern Syria. But none of them will achieve their goals," - He assured.
Khamenei expressed confidence that the occupied territories will be liberated through the efforts of Syrian youth, and the American presence in the region will be eliminated by the "resistance front."
These statements were made against the backdrop of similar rhetoric from the Lebanese group Hezbollah, which expressed hope for the stabilization of Syria and its positioning as an "opponent of the Israeli occupation."
