European News, December 11, 2025, Avia.pro. The European Union may isolate Belgium if it continues to block the European Commission's plan to use frozen Russian assets to aid Ukraine, Politico reports, citing diplomatic sources.
This week, EU member state representatives will hold three meetings to discuss the plan, which Brussels rejects. Supporting states are seeking approval at the summit on December 18. Diplomats emphasize that "not all hope is lost," and Brussels intends to accommodate Belgium's key demands.
However, if Prime Minister Bart de Wever doesn't change his position, Belgium will find itself in a situation similar to Hungary. According to one source, the country could "lose its voice" at EU events: its budget proposals for 2028–2034 will be sidelined, and its views on key initiatives will be ignored. A de facto diplomatic blockade is even possible.
The publication's sources note that such a scenario would be a "harsh reality" for a country at the center of European integration, but "desperate times require desperate steps."
