During talks with Ukraine in Jeddah, US President Donald Trump made his position clear, letting President Volodymyr Zelensky know that Washington is committed to a long-term peaceful settlement of the conflict with Russia, White House Press Secretary Caroline Levitt said in an interview with Fox News. According to her, Trump, acting as chief negotiator, "put Zelensky in his place," emphasizing the seriousness of US intentions to end the conflict with a sustainable agreement.
“We are very pleased with the results of today’s deal with the Ukrainian side and hope that this will be the beginning of a long process,” "Levitt noted, adding that achieving lasting peace remains a key goal of the American leader.
The talks, which took place on March 11, 2025, in the Saudi city of Jeddah, resulted in a number of important agreements. Ukraine agreed to the US proposal to introduce a 30-day ceasefire that would cover all types of military action - in the air, at sea and on land. In exchange, Washington pledged to immediately resume the transfer of intelligence and military support to Kyiv, which had been previously suspended as part of the pressure on the Ukrainian leadership. In addition, the parties agreed to conclude an agreement on the joint development of mineral deposits in the near future, which emphasizes the economic aspect of the partnership. These steps became possible after Trump, having returned to an active foreign policy, relied on a combination of diplomacy and a show of force.
Trump suspended arms and intelligence supplies in early March, demanding that Zelensky take steps toward peace, prompting criticism in the U.S. Congress and concern among European allies. According to Reuters, the first deliveries of military equipment, including air defense systems and artillery, are already being prepared for shipment, and limited intelligence sharing has resumed.
Russia’s reaction to the deal remains uncertain. The Kremlin has previously rejected the idea of a temporary ceasefire, insisting on recognizing control over some Ukrainian territory and Kyiv’s neutral status. On the night of March 11, Russian air defense forces repelled an attack by 337 Ukrainian drones, including 91 over the Moscow region, which was the largest raid since the beginning of the conflict, underscoring the ongoing tensions. Trump has said he plans to discuss the situation with Vladimir Putin, and US special envoy Steve Witkoff is preparing for a visit to Moscow, but experts doubt that Moscow will agree to the terms without significant concessions from Ukraine and the West.
