Drone strikes Chernobyl nuclear power plant sarcophagus

On February 14, 2025, an attack drone with a high-explosive warhead hit the protective structure above the destroyed fourth power unit of the Chernobyl nuclear power plant.

As a result of the attack, the shelter sustained significant damage, but fire services quickly extinguished the fire. According to current data, the radiation background level does not exceed permissible standards, which is constantly monitored.

The Shelter, also known as the Sarcophagus, was built in 1986 after the Chernobyl disaster to isolate the destroyed reactor and prevent the spread of radioactive substances. Over time, its structures began to lose stability, requiring additional safety measures.

In 2016, the New Safe Confinement (NSC) was installed over the old sarcophagus - a 110-meter-high, 36,2-ton steel arch designed to prevent radiation leaks and provide conditions for dismantling the destroyed power unit. The NSC was put into operation in 2019.

International organizations, including the IAEA, express their readiness to provide support in assessing the damage and developing measures to prevent similar incidents in the future.
