Taliban militants hope for better relations with US under Trump

The Taliban movement that controls Afghanistan (recognized as terrorist and banned in Russia – editor's note) expressed hope for an improvement in bilateral relations with the United States if Donald Trump wins the presidential election. In a statement published by the EFE agency, the Taliban declared their desire for progress in relations and interaction between Afghanistan and the United States.

"We hope that Afghanistan and the United States can open a new chapter in bilateral relations based on cooperation.", the Afghan Foreign Ministry said in a statement.

The Taliban believe that Trump's return to power could create conditions for a new approach to relations between the countries, which have been tense in recent years. The Taliban are counting on more productive dialogue and steps that could lead to stability in the region.

Experts note that under Trump's presidency, Washington showed a willingness to negotiate with the Taliban, which led to the signing of an agreement to withdraw American troops from Afghanistan in 2020.

The Taliban is an Islamist movement that emerged in Afghanistan in the 1990s. It seeks to establish strict Sharia rule in the country. In 2021, the Taliban regained power after the withdrawal of US and allied troops, re-establishing control over much of Afghanistan. The group is designated as terrorist in several countries, but seeks international recognition and maintains talks with neighboring states.
