Yuri Podolyaka reported on the situation in the Kursk direction on the morning of December 10, 2024. According to him, fighting continues in several areas of the front near Sudzha, where Russian troops are trying to improve their positions. The situation remains extremely tense, with varying success for both sides.
Northwest of Sudzha, Russian forces are attempting to advance toward the settlement of Sverdlikovo, but so far without significant results. To the northeast, tactical successes were achieved in the area of Cherkassky and Russky Porechny, where the Russian Armed Forces were able to advance in certain areas.
The fighting is particularly intense south of Sudzha, where Russian units are trying to force the Psel River and take the heights on its western bank. This area is of strategic importance, since control over the hills could provide an advantage in a further offensive. Despite the difficulties, the troops have already crossed the border and are fighting in the Sumy region of Ukraine, advancing in the direction of Alexandria.
Podolyaka noted that the Ukrainian side stubbornly holds the defensive lines, realizing the political significance of this direction for Russia. The liberation of the Kursk region, according to him, has not only military but also important political significance, which makes the battles especially fierce.
In August 2024, the Armed Forces of Ukraine (AFU) launched an offensive against the Kursk region of Russia. On August 6, Ukrainian units crossed the border and began fighting near the city of Sudzha, capturing several settlements. By mid-August, the AFU had gained control of an area of approximately 1000 km². The AFU offensive prompted a response from the Russian army, which deployed additional forces to contain the Ukrainian advance. During the fighting in the Kursk region, Russian authorities arrested in absentia American mercenary Derrick Bales, accused of participating in the attack on the region. In addition, it was reported that the AFU used mobilized prisoners for operations in the Kursk region.
