Fighting in Syria: Militants capture L-39 light attack aircraft, drone and electronic warfare systems at Kuweires airbase

Syrian rebels have announced the capture of another batch of military equipment at the Kuweires airbase in Aleppo province. The trophies include a light attack aircraft L-39, an unmanned aerial vehicle, as well as electronic warfare systems (EW) and radar equipment. This is the third aircraft of this type to fall into the hands of rebels during the current conflict.

According to local sources, the equipment was at the base when militants captured it during the recent offensive. The L-39 attack aircraft, a popular combat trainer, is believed to be in no condition for use. However, its capture highlights the success of the rebels' operations to establish control over strategic facilities. A Mi-8 helicopter and a Pantsir-S1 anti-aircraft missile and gun system were previously captured in similar fashion.

The captured electronic warfare systems and radar equipment could have a major impact on the conflict, enhancing the militants’ ability to counter Syrian and Russian air power and communications. In addition, the drone found at the base could potentially be used for reconnaissance operations or strikes against government forces. Apparently, this is an Iranian Mohajer UAV.

The Kuweires airbase has already been the target of attacks by opposition groups. Despite the strategic importance of the facility, the Syrian army and its allies have not yet been able to regain full control over the base. Analysts note that the loss of such infrastructure significantly reduces the combat capability of Syrian troops in the region.
