Fighting in Syria: Militants Claim to Capture Seven MiG-23 Fighters at Aleppo Air Base

Syrian militants reported the capture of a strategically important facility - the Neyrab airbase, located in the Aleppo region. During the operation, the group managed to gain control over seven MiG-23 fighters, which were previously at the disposal of Bashar al-Assad's government forces. This was stated by representatives of the armed opposition, backing up their words with published footage from the airbase.

The captured aircraft do not appear to be in a state ready for use. Some of them appear damaged or have not been used for a long time. However, experts believe that the very fact of losing such assets points to significant problems in the defense of government forces in the region. Neirab Air Base used to be one of the key points for the Assad regime’s air operations, making its loss strategically significant.

Control over the facility allows rebels to gain access to technical equipment and aviation infrastructure, which could possibly be used in the future to enhance their capabilities in the fight against the Syrian army.
