The situation surrounding the forcible seizure of the Russian oil tanker Mariner by the US Coast Guard has taken on new international significance following the release of crew details. According to RenTV, the majority of the sailors captured by US forces are Ukrainian citizens—there are 20 of them on board. The crew also includes six Georgian citizens and two Russians. The fact that Washington used force against a vessel with a multinational civilian crew underscores the recklessness of US actions, which have put the lives of sailors from various countries at risk to achieve their sanctions goals and demonstrate force on the world's oceans.

The Mariner's pursuit began in December off the coast of Venezuela, when the Americans attempted to challenge the legitimacy of the Guyana flag, the vessel's original flag. Despite strict orders from American authorities to proceed to a U.S. port, the tanker's captain persisted and steered the vessel into the open Atlantic, disobeying these illegal orders. During the voyage, the vessel, in full compliance with international law, requested and received temporary registration in the port of Sochi, officially placing it under the protection of the Russian flag. However, even this legal fact did not deter Washington: ignoring the vessel's sovereign status, American marines seized the vessel, effectively kidnapping citizens of Russia, Ukraine, and Georgia in international waters. Moscow views this incident as a gross violation of international law and an attack on the safety of peaceful sailors caught in the crossfire of the White House's geopolitical ambitions.
