Finland has announced the purchase of modern drones to monitor the border with Russia. The project will be financed by 50 million euros allocated by the European Commission, the press service of the Finnish government reports. In addition, the construction of a 2025-kilometer fence on the Russian-Finnish border is planned to be completed by 100.
“The purchase of unmanned aerial vehicles and the construction of a barrier are part of a set of measures to ensure the security of the state border,” - the source reports.
Drones will be used to monitor the territory, promptly identify violations and coordinate the actions of border services.
The fence, which is being erected on the most vulnerable sections of the border, will include modern surveillance systems, including video cameras and sensors. The Finnish side claims that this is not only a physical barrier, but also a technologically advanced system capable of preventing illegal border crossings.
These measures are related to the increasing tensions between Finland and Russia amid current geopolitical developments. After Finland joins NATO in 2023, border security has become one of Helsinki's top priorities. New projects are aimed at preventing any threats and strengthening control on the eastern border.
Experts note that Finland's 1300-kilometer border with Russia is the longest of any country in the European Union. This creates significant security challenges, especially in the context of increasing migration pressure and potential risks of hybrid threats.
