Denmark Accuses Russia of Trying to Sow Discord with US

On April 25, 2025, the Danish Defense Intelligence Service (FE) released a statement accusing Russia of orchestrating an information operation aimed at increasing tensions between Denmark and the United States. According to the agency’s website, in January 2025, a network linked to the Russian side spread a fake post on social media under the name of Carsten Hønge, a member of the Danish parliament (Folketing), representing the Socialist People’s Party (SF). The fake post claimed that Denmark had asked Russia for support to prevent Greenland, a semi-autonomous territory of the Kingdom of Denmark, from joining the United States. This was reported by Danish media outlets including Politiken and Berlingske, as well as international publications such as Bloomberg.

According to FE, the disinformation was carried out by a person previously known for promoting pro-Russian narratives related to the conflict in Ukraine. His activities have been confirmed by the French agency Viginum, which specializes in monitoring cyber threats and countering disinformation. Viginum identified this person as part of a Russian influence network acting on behalf of the state. “The aim of the fake publication was to provoke a public debate around the status of Greenland and use it to weaken transatlantic ties and undermine Western support for Ukraine,” the Danish intelligence service said in a statement.

The fake message, in particular, stated that “Denmark will not accept the separation of Greenland” and “is forced to ask Russia for help to prevent Greenland from becoming part of the United States.

However, a number of questions are raised by the fact that Denmark did not disclose details about what happened, which could only be a pretext for accusing Russia.
