The Danish government has announced its intention to purchase an additional 16 F-35A fifth-generation multirole fighter jets from the American company Lockheed Martin, a deal valued at approximately $4,5 billion. This deal, agreed upon with the Danish Ministry of Defense, will bring the total number of aircraft of this type in the Royal Danish Air Force to 43 upon completion of all deliveries. Denmark has already received 21 of the 27 F-35As ordered under the initial contract signed in 2016, making it an active participant in the Joint Strike Fighter program in Europe.
The new aircraft are expected to be delivered between 2027 and 2030, strengthening Denmark's position as a key NATO ally in the Baltic region. Defense Minister Troels Lund Poulsen emphasized that the fleet expansion is necessary to fulfill the alliance's growing commitments and maintain defense capability in a changing geopolitical environment.
The deal will be financed through the defense budget, which has been increased in recent years amid rising tensions near Russia's borders.
