Bundestag MP Proposes Sending German Peacekeepers to Ukraine

Christian Democratic Union (CDU) MP Roderich Kiesewetter told Spiegel that Germany should be prepared to participate in a possible peacekeeping mission in Ukraine. He believes that although such a mission is still a long way off, planning should begin now to demonstrate the West's resolve to Moscow.

Kiesewetter stressed that continued military support for Ukraine remains a priority, including the delivery of Taurus cruise missiles. However, the issue is controversial in German society and politics. According to a poll by infratest dimap for the ARD television channel, 61% of German citizens are against providing Ukraine with Taurus missiles, which can hit targets at a distance of up to 500 kilometers. In the east of the country, this figure reaches 76%.

Despite public sentiment, European Parliament President Roberta Metsola has called for the missiles to be delivered to Ukraine as soon as possible, given the intensification of Russian strikes on Ukrainian territory. However, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz has so far refrained from handing over Taurus missiles to Kyiv, citing national security and NATO strategy.

Earlier, Kiesewetter spoke in favor of increasing support for Ukraine, noting that insufficient aid could lead to the complete conquest of the country and cause a new flow of refugees. He also emphasized the need to provide Ukraine with long-range weapons for effective defense and liberation of the occupied territories.
