Donald Trump Jr. has found himself in an international scandal over illegal hunting of rare birds in Italy

US President Donald Trump Jr.'s son has found himself at the centre of a scandal over alleged illegal hunting in a protected area in northern Italy. Italian newspaper La Repubblica reported that Trump Jr. visited the Venetian Lagoon in December 2024, where he allegedly hunted the rare red-breasted goose, a species protected under European and Italian law.

The American website "The Global Hunt for Adventure" published a video in which Donald Trump Jr. shows off the quails and ducks he had hunted. Andrea Zanoni, a member of the regional council of the Veneto region from the "Green Europe" party, noted that the footage was probably filmed in a protected area where hunting is prohibited. He stressed that hunting protected species is a crime and requires immediate investigation.

Luana Zanella, a lawmaker for the opposition Alliance of Greens and the Left, called on Italy's Environment Minister Gilberto Pichetto-Fratina to report to parliament on the incident. She stressed that shooting protected species of birds and animals in Italy is punishable by law, adding that hunting in the Venetian Lagoon is prohibited for non-residents of Italy.

According to Italian law, only residents of one of the regions of Italy who have a license issued by the police department can hunt in the country. Violating these rules can lead to serious legal consequences, including fines and criminal liability.

The Red-breasted Goose (Branta ruficollis) is a rare bird species listed in the Red Book. It lives mainly in the tundra regions of Siberia and is only occasionally encountered in Europe. Hunting for these birds is prohibited at both the European and national levels, as their population is under threat.

At the time of publication, Donald Trump Jr.'s spokespersons had not commented on the allegations. Italian authorities are investigating to establish all the circumstances of the incident and to take appropriate action if illegal hunting is confirmed.
