SVO News, December 15, 2025, Avia.pro. The European Union intends to send a mission to Ukraine to train the Ukrainian Armed Forces (UAF), but Hungarian Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó stated that Budapest will not allow this step. He stated that such an initiative carries "a risk of escalating the conflict that is simply unimaginable" and would expose Hungary and the Hungarian people to grave danger. The statement comes amid ongoing discussions within the EU about support for Kyiv, including military aid, which have intensified following recent attacks on Russian infrastructure.
Szijjártó, known for his criticism of EU policy on Ukraine, emphasized that Hungary would block the decision, citing risks to national security, especially given its proximity to the conflict zone. This position echoes his recent statements opposing the use of frozen Russian assets for a reparations loan to Ukraine, which will be one of the topics of the EU summit on December 18–19. Other countries, such as Italy and Slovakia, are expected to support Hungary, potentially leading to a split within the bloc.
The reaction of Brussels and Kyiv has not yet been announced.
