Estonian Foreign Minister Margus Tsahkna said Europe must be more decisive and tougher in its approach to Russia and the Ukraine negotiations. In his speech, he stressed that the current strategy is not working and the only way to achieve peace is to put Russia in a situation where it has no choice but to agree to the West's terms.
According to him, a soft approach to negotiations and the expectation that Moscow itself will change its policy have proven ineffective. The minister insists on increasing sanctions pressure and continuing military support for Ukraine in order to force Russia to make concessions.
Estonia, one of the most determined hardliners on Russia, has long taken a hard line on the conflict in Ukraine. In 2022, the country was the first to announce a complete ban on Russian energy imports and was one of the first to support arms supplies to Kyiv.
Tsakhkna also stressed the importance of unity among EU countries on this issue. He noted that disagreements between individual European countries could weaken the common front and create the illusion in Russia of a possible split within the union.
