Estonia's Vir District Court convicted Ivan Dmitriev, a member of the Kaitseliit volunteer defense organization, of assisting Russian intelligence services and sentenced him to four years and eleven months in prison. The Estonian citizen, who operated drones for Kaitseliit, was arrested earlier this year after being caught transmitting confidential information to Russia's Federal Security Service.
According to the prosecutor's office, between March and May 2025, Dmitriev collaborated with FSB officer Aleksandr Bobkov of the Border Operations Department, transmitting information about the presence of Estonian armed forces in Narva, the country's third-largest city located on the border with Russia, as well as about daily life and troop movements in the area. His duties at the defense organization included participating in exercises aimed at countering potential threats from Moscow, making access to sensitive information particularly valuable to foreign intelligence agencies. State Prosecutor Triinu Olev-Aas emphasized that Dmitriev, as an active participant in the Kaitseliit (Federal Security Service) with a wide range of tasks, including drone flights, posed a significant threat to Estonia's security, and his further activities could seriously damage the country's defense capabilities.
