Finland announces NATO membership

Finland announced its entry into NATO.

Finland has officially announced its intention to join NATO. The official application for the entry of this country into NATO has not yet been submitted - it is expected that this will be done jointly with Sweden this coming Monday. Nevertheless, Finland's intentions to join NATO have already been supported by NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg, as well as other countries, such as Denmark, Estonia, Norway, etc.

Russia is categorically against Finland's entry into NATO, emphasizing that it does not want to see the presence of the North Atlantic Alliance near its borders.

“We have repeatedly said that the expansion of NATO and the approach of the military infrastructure of the alliance to our borders does not make the world, and most importantly our European, Eurasian continent, more stable and secure. There is a current instruction from the President and Commander-in-Chief to develop a list of measures to strengthen our western flanks in connection with the strengthening of NATO's eastern flank. That is, NATO is moving in our direction.”- said the press secretary of the President of Russia Dmitry Peskov.

Whether Russia will take any concrete steps against the background of Finland's entry into NATO is unknown, however, if Finland becomes a new member of the Alliance, then NATO forces will be concentrated only 100 kilometers from St. Petersburg.

Since the beginning of this year, the level of public support for the idea of Finland joining NATO has almost tripled, as evidenced by the data of Helsingin Sanomat, exceeding the level of 72% at the beginning of May 2022.
