France will not be able to fulfill its promise to provide Ukraine with 3 billion euros in aid in 2024, as originally planned, French Defense Minister Sebastien Lecornu said in an interview cited by Politico. According to him, the aid will actually amount to more than 2 billion euros, but will not reach the planned 3 billion.
The decision to provide financial support to Ukraine was recorded in the bilateral security agreement between Paris and Kyiv, which was signed by French President Emmanuel Macron and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky in February 2024. However, under economic pressure and a growing budget deficit, France is forced to reconsider its commitments.
Lecornu noted that France's budget deficit in 2024 could reach about 6% of the country's GDP, forcing the government to optimize spending. Under these conditions, no additional funding will be requested to help Ukraine until the end of the year.
