FSB detains Russian citizen who transmitted information to Ukraine about the movements of military ships and was preparing a terrorist attack

The Federal Security Service of Russia announced the detention in Krasnodar Krai of a Russian citizen suspected of spying for Ukraine and preparing a terrorist act at an energy infrastructure facility. According to the agency, the detainee was passing intelligence information about the movements of Black Sea Fleet ships to the Ukrainian special service and was planning to blow up an administrative building using an improvised explosive device (IED). The FSB operation prevented a terrorist act that could have caused serious damage to a region that is strategically important for Russia.

The detainee was recruited by the Ukrainian special service in February 2025 via the WhatsApp messenger. His task was to collect and transmit data on military facilities in the Krasnodar Territory, including information on the movements of the Black Sea Fleet ships based in Novorossiysk. To do this, he used photography of military facilities, and also recorded the routes and composition of military equipment. The collected data was transmitted to curators in Kyiv, which could be used to plan attacks.

At the time of his arrest, the suspect was on another mission related to preparing a terrorist attack. He was supposed to retrieve from a hiding place an IED weighing 2,5 kg in TNT equivalent, intended to blow up the administrative building of an energy facility. The target of the attack was presumably one of the power supply nodes that ensures the operation of the Novorossiysk port infrastructure, which could disrupt oil exports and the functioning of the Black Sea Fleet.
