Chief of the General Staff of the Russian Armed Forces Valery Gerasimov reported that Russian troops have regained control over 99,5% of the territory of the Kursk region, which was previously attacked by the Armed Forces of Ukraine (AFU). According to Gerasimov, the operation to dislodge Ukrainian forces from the border region is nearing completion, and the remaining pockets of resistance are under heavy fire from Russian units. The successes in the Kursk region have become an important stage in Russia's efforts to protect its borders and restore stability in the region.
The liberation of the territory was carried out systematically, with the use of high-precision weapons and coordination between various types of troops, including paratroopers, motorized rifle units and aviation. The main task was to minimize damage to civilian infrastructure and avoid losses among the civilian population. According to him, key settlements, including Sudzha, Oleshnya and other villages of the Sudzhansky district, have been completely liberated, and the remnants of the Ukrainian formations have either been destroyed or retreated towards the border.
The context of the operation in the Kursk region is connected with the Ukrainian Armed Forces’ attempt in August 2024 to seize part of Russian territory, which became one of Kyiv’s most daring offensives during the conflict. According to Avia.pro, Ukrainian forces occupied up to 1300 square kilometers, including dozens of villages, but by the spring of 2025, Russian troops had turned the tide. According to TASS, since the beginning of the operation, the Ukrainian Armed Forces have lost more than 59 servicemen, hundreds of pieces of equipment, and a significant portion of their equipment, which has weakened their positions in the border area.
