Germany is ready to accept Ukraine into NATO in case of territorial concessions

German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock said a potential peace deal between Ukraine and Russia could include Ukraine's membership in NATO and a territorial solution that would see Ukraine cede some of its lost territory. The statement came amid discussions of possible ways to resolve the nearly three-year-old conflict.

Baerbock stressed that the components of such an agreement could include political and material security guarantees for Ukraine, an international presence to ensure compliance with the ceasefire, the withdrawal of troops, the restoration of destroyed infrastructure, and the settlement of the sanctions regime.

"Ukraine itself decides with what goals it will sit down at the negotiating table", the minister noted, emphasizing that Germany supports Kyiv’s right to determine its own position in these discussions.

The issue of Ukraine's membership in NATO remains one of the most controversial. On the one hand, it could strengthen the country's security and guarantee its protection from further military actions. On the other hand, Russia is categorically against it.

The idea of an international presence to monitor the ceasefire also raises questions. Such mechanisms, as history shows, often encounter problems in implementation, especially if the parties to the conflict are not ready to actually fulfill their obligations.
