Germany and Norway to equip submarines with new heavy torpedo Common Heavy Weight Torpedo

The U212 CD class submarines being developed jointly by Norway and Germany are reported to be equipped with a new heavy torpedo, the Common Heavy Weight Torpedo (CHWT). This weapon is intended to significantly enhance the combat capabilities of both navies, ensuring high efficiency in the face of modern threats.

The new torpedo is based on an upgraded version of the DM2A4, which has already proven itself as an effective weapon. The DM2A4 is equipped with a fiber-optic control system, a low-noise electric motor, and a passive sonar, which allows it to detect targets even in difficult hydrological conditions. The CHWT will retain these advantages, but will have additional capabilities.

The developers have not yet disclosed the full technical characteristics of the CHWT, but experts assume that the new torpedo will retain the standard 533 mm caliber, but will have a significantly expanded range and an improved warhead. It is possible that new technologies will appear in its design, including improved guidance and control systems.

The first U212 CD-class submarine is scheduled to enter service with Norway in 2029 and the CHWT will be its main armament.
