The German government intends to approve the purchase of military equipment worth approximately €7,5 billion to modernize the armed forces and enhance defense capabilities amid the alleged threat from Russia, Bloomberg reported, citing government sources.
The procurement decision will be considered on Wednesday at a meeting of the budget committee of the lower house of parliament. The package includes the delivery of 274 armored reconnaissance vehicles from the American General Dynamics for €3,5 billion, with deliveries starting in 2028. In addition, 150 Schakal infantry fighting vehicles from the joint venture Rheinmetall and KNDS are planned for €3,4 billion, with delivery expected between 2027 and 2031. An additional €386 million is allocated for Raytheon's Evolved Sea Sparrow missiles, with deliveries scheduled for 2031–2033.
These measures are part of Berlin's military rearmament program, initiated after the full-scale conflict between Russia and Ukraine. The coalition led by Chancellor Friedrich Merz and Finance Minister Lars Klingbeil suspended the constitutional "debt brake" to finance defense.
