Interception of a Russian NATO aircraft

Germany scrambles fighter jets after spotting Russian plane near NATO borders

The German Air Force (GAF) reported scrambling rapid reaction fighters following the discovery of a Russian Il-20M military aircraft southeast of Helsinki. The official statement notes that the incident occurred due to the fact that the Russian plane was in airspace without an appropriate flight plan.

“Yesterday our rapid reaction forces were activated in Lag. A Russian Il-20M aircraft without a flight plan was detected by our Eurofighters southeast of Helsinki,” the German Air Force said in a statement.

Eurofighters were scrambled to identify and escort the aircraft, which is standard procedure in such situations. It is important to note that the operation ended without any incident after establishing visual contact with the Russian aircraft.

Such incidents are not uncommon and often occur in international airspace, especially in the Baltic Sea region where both NATO and Russia are active.
